A major rule is that your wine rack should allow the bottles to be laid horizontally to allow the wine to touch the cork and keep it moist. If the wine does not touch the cork, it can cause it to shrivel and air can seep into the wine bottle - which would ruin the taste.
Decide how many of wine bottles you intend to keep on hand. If you only like to have four or five bottles of wine out at a time you can create a wine rack that is one level, and will suit this. However, if you want to keep fifteen wine bottles on display, plan for a much larger wine rack, as well as more space in the kitchen for it to go or possibly in an adjacent room.
Wine racks can be made out of almost any material you want. I highly recommend using the same wood, finish and color as your cabinets because it will flow nicely throughout the space. However, there is nothing wrong with having a contrasting color for your wine rack as well, maybe the contrasting color could match your island?
The location of your wine rack is important, you obviously do not want it to be right next to a window where the wine bottles may be hit by sunlight. This could ruin the flavor, and ultimately lead you to throw out a good amount of wine and who wants to waste wine?
So if you love wine, I highly recommend the addition of a wine rack in your kitchen remodel! They can be made in practically any size or style you prefer so it would not be hard to find one perfect for you and your kitchen.
Till next time,
