Many people believe that you should use bleach to kill and remove mold, and I have used bleach before to get rid of the mold in my shower, and it kills it almost on contact. However, the environmental protection agency actually recommends against using bleach to kill and remove mold. We all know, bleach is a chemical and a strong chemical at that. A better alternative to killing and removing mold is to use a natural mold killing product instead. Think about it, if you use bleach to clean out your tub, and then let your child (or you) take a bath in the tub, you may be soaking in more than just bubbles. Harsh chemicals are not good for your skin!
Another disadvantage of the mold is that it is corrosive, meaning that it deteriorates materials and porous substances (aka the liner of your bathtub) which is something you do not want to happen because you are just going to end up replacing your tub.
So why not take a chance on some environmentally friendly products to try and kill the mold? One option I read about on care2.com was a natural option with tea tree oil. It is actually pretty simple, all you are going to need is about two teaspoons of tea tree oil and two cups of water. Mix the two ingredients together and put them into a spray bottle. Spray the mixture right on the mold and let it soak in, and it should kill the mold without any rinsing or scrubbing.
Another option I have heard about is using vinegar, I know, vinegar stinks, but it works! If you use straight vinegar in a spray bottle or a washcloth it can kill up to 82 percent of mold. The EPA recommends white distilled vinegar. After you spray it on the problem area let it sit for a few hours and the mold should dissipate.
Do you have any other natural remedies as far as getting rid of the mold or any other area of the home? I would love to hear them, please share them with me in the comments.
Till next time,
