Do you know the real reason behind Thanksgiving, though? Why is there this giant feast served every single year and why is it the perfect time for families to gather and mingle? Thanksgiving is always celebrated the fourth Thursday in November, and in the United States, it originated as a harvest festival in the year 1780; however, it was not made a federal holiday until the year 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln.
The event we consider to be the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated in 1621. At this special event ninety, Native Americans and fifty-three Pilgrims attended a dinner after their first harvest in the New World. What is interesting is that the New England colonists had been used to celebrating an event such as Thanksgiving whenever there was an end of a drought or a military victory, so when they came over to the New World they shared the event of the first harvest with the Native Americans.
Well there is your fun fact for the holiday season! Because I am such a Thanksgiving buff, or rather a Fall season buff I would love to know your family traditions for the season. Share with me in the comments!
