If your kitchen is a little bit smaller don't fear! An island doesn't have to be huge for it to be useful. You could try an island with open storage at the bottom to help keep the space feeling airy and open (almost just like a table with a base). That way you get the extra counter space and a little bit of storage, but it doesn't look bulky. Another great idea for a smaller space is a mobile cart island. Not only are they inexpensive, but they usually will come in a different design style than the rest of your kitchen (unless you get one custom made) and with a different design style, you can create some contrast which I highly recommend when it comes to your island, it helps give the space character.
If your kitchen is an odd shape, that is ok too! We actually did a kitchen remodel once with an island that turned out like a triangle to match the layout of their kitchen, and I have to say it turned out awesome! So if your kitchen is diamond-shaped or oval I think it would be refreshing to have the island match the overall layout. Don't think an island always has to be a square or a rectangle.
When it comes to choosing the height of your island it is important to first think of the function you want out of the island. Do you plan to sit around it? If so, you want to make sure the height is ideal for barstools or chairs. It is always an idea to have a two tier height kitchen island too, maybe where your bar stools go have it a few inches higher than the rest of it to give the space some nice flow.
It is important to know ahead of time if you want to add any appliances or fixtures in your island. We often have clients who want to add an extra sink or stove-top in their island. You want to make sure you have the right space to add the appliances you want, and also have extra counter space! I highly recommend adding a sink in your island, even if it is just a small one. It is always a nice addition to any kitchen space.
Now I mentioned a little earlier, that I like the idea of contrast when it comes to an island. I always love when clients choose to pick a different color for the cabinets of their island, then the rest of their kitchen. I think it just creates a nice design throughout the space.
There are so many options when it comes to your island, so try and not get scared off if you think your space isn't right for an island because I promise you there is always an option! We can always help you come up with a creative solution for your kitchen space!
Till next time,
