Today, let's talk about butcher block counter tops. Butcher block has been growing in popularity, in part because of the rise in popularity of the modern farmhouse style. It's also popular for the fact that it can be cost-effective and less expensive than quartz or other solid surfaces. Also, It is very easy to repair unlike other counter tops.
There are two main types of butcher block. The first type is called edge grain butcher block. This is when long strips of wood are glued together in a parallel manner. The end result is a very durable wood surface. In our showroom, all our butcher block is edge grain. This wood grain doesn't require as much maintenance as the other type of butcher block, which we will get to in a second.

The other type of butcher block is called end grain. End grain butcher block looks like a checker board. The pieces are laid vertically and its use is common among chefs due to the fact that the wood grain protects knives from dulling. Many professionals say that this type of butcher block is better because it protects itself against scratches. However, it does require more maintenance.

A common myth with butcher block is that it is available in only one species of wood. Butcher block actually comes in a variety of species! Here are some of the species we have in our showroom!

Butcher block is great. That being said, just because you CAN cut on the surface doesn't mean you SHOULD cut on the surface. When you do, make sure the surface is clean and use a washable cutting board!
